Old Waynfletes Travel Miles to Christi
There was another highly successful Old Waynflete dinner on March 19th at Corpus Christi College with the dining hall almost full to capacity. Amongst those attending were Rob Herbertson (52-61) from South Africa, Merrick Dowson (61-70) from California and David Winfield from Switzerland (46-54). The evening began with a splendid champagne reception hosted by Bill Morris (56-64) and David Dunsmore (65-72) in the Rainolds Room, where the ice was quickly broken as old friendships were re-established and new ones forged. On to a sumptuous dinner in the elegant and intimate dining hall with tables regaled in the College Silver twinkling in the candlelight. Before dinner there was a round of applause for Graham Pye (50-59), a staunch supporter of the club and a terrific benefactor for the school, then grace by former teacher Reverend Lorne Denny.
After an excellent meal, and with the port and coffee on the table, we were entertained by two highly amusing speeches. The Master spoke on changing educational practice and standards, whilst the guest speaker Old Waynflete, Sir David Madden (57-64), former British Ambassador to Greece, followed this with a few well chosen reminiscences from his school days, and particularly his early posting to Russia as a junior diplomat, which kept the audience laughing throughout.
There was a birthday cake for Bill Morris, which was shared amongst the many that retired to the College bar to continue their revelry and remember those past school days with a fondness and hilarity that grows with time.
We look forward to the dinner which will be on the same weekend next year, and hope to see many OWs at this and the many other events between.
