Edgar joined MCS as a day scholar from the Oxford Central School in 1922 and left in 1926 and, uniquely amongst current OWs, his whole school education took place in the Victorian Schoolroom (now the College Library) before the school moved to its present site in 1928.
He clearly remembers playing hockey with shinty style sticks in the old Longwall playground, one of the birthplaces of school hockey, as well as playing cricket on the school island which even in those days served as the school playing fields linked by the eponymous white bridges to the boarding house. He also has fond memories of the support he received from his teachers, especially Major C. Shepherd who recognised and encouraged his academic potential and Charles ‘Brigger' Brownridge the then Master.
After school he became a Chartered Accountant, a career he followed through to retirement. He now lives at home in Cambridgeshire, leading an independent life and, according to his daughters, determined to continue to do so.
We send him our felicitations and wish him many more ‘Happy Birthdays'. |
